    Hi Everyone,

I inherited a pond with koi when I moved house. There were 4 large koi; one over 2 feet and the others about 15 inches. They have overwintered twice since we moved in and seem healthy and vigorous. About 10 days ago, I introduced 4 small koi (about 8 inches) and a couple of small golden tench into the pond. The new fish barely make an appearance and one, the most active, has died. The original fish stopped feeding for a week but have now started to take food. I had the water tested by the aquatics centre where I purchased the fish and all was well. I was advised to add an anti-parasite product, which I did and this did not appear to affect the fish despite the water turning bright green.

It would seem now, that the larger koi have regained their appetite and one of the small koi has made an appearance so, I am optimistic that the odd behaviour of the fish was a reaction to new fish being added. I would be interested to receive any observations on what I have described to reassure me that this is a normal train of events.

Hello and welcome to the forum.
What filters do you have and how often do you clean them.
What percentage water change are you currently doing per week.
Photos of any equipment you are using would be helpful

Hello and welcome. Sometimes when adding small fish to an existing pond they can be a little shy but tend to buddy up or in your case I would have expected them to shoal together. I would not expect them to affect your larger fish however.
If you suspect a parasite then you should have a scrape done so you know what you are treating for.
The main thin is to be observant and give as many details as possible.

I have a brush filter that I clean every 3 months (one row of brushes each time), a second filter with what looks like egg-box patterned foam layers and a by-pass with an ultra-violet tube. The pond capacity is 7500 litres. I don't regularly change the water but top up from time to time with rain water. The pond is lined with what I assume is a butyl rubber liner with a Jebao DCT-1200 pump.

My filters are cleaned once a week in winter and twice a week in summer. Think you need to up your cleaning regime
A minimum of 10% water change a week. Don't use rain water as this can contain airborne contaminates and toxins. Tap water is a much more stable source of water which should dechlorinated prior to bring put in the pond
Do you have an air pump as when the weather gets warmer your pond will need it

Thanks Andy, Fortunately, the previous owner of the property left instructions on their management of the pond over the previous ten years together with useful books on koi and pond-keeping. The regime you follow would be too rigorous and time-consuming for me, though I'm sure that for an enthusiast, it is desirable.

Hi Paul, there are filter systems around nowadays that offer quick cleans and hassle free maintenance. A nexus may be a solution to your problem or even a self cleaning drum, the days of dragging brushes and foam out can be consigned to the history books if that's not your thing. Although I do know members on here that enjoy that side of the hobby.

Hi Jim, Thanks for the information. I'll do a bit of research on more up-to-date filters including the Nexus. I have to stay, however, that having inherited my pond and koi with a house purchase, I don't consider myself an enthusiast, merely someone who wishes to keep the pond and fish 'ticking over' with a minimum of maintenance as a feature of the garden.

hi paul, first of all welcome, and second i used to be in the same frame of mind as you when i first started,i just had a fish pond and kept it ticking over, cleaned when i felt like it,then a member of a koi club came round as i had an issue with my fish,he sorted it and then said something that stuck in my mind and changed my whole outlook on keeping fish, heres what he said "you havent got a fish pond, what you have is a toilet in your garden that the fish live in,so they pee and poop in it and then you want them to just keep living,so imagine if you lived in a swimming pool that you pee and poop in and then you have to eat your food in there aswel, and not on plates, and maybe once a month i may take some dirty water out and put some fresh in,how long would you last" this thought changed the way i thought and i realised what i had been doing wasnt fair on the koi, they are after all living beings, and i certainly wouldnt want to live like that, not having a go as ive been there myself, its just now i look at myself as more of a carer for them, andi

Again, thanks for the response and I see exactly where you are coming from. However, the pond has almost certainly been operating for 20 or more years on a regime of occasional cleaning of the filters and replenishment of the water. I have looked at replacing the old brush and mat filters with a modern all-in-one pressure filter and have read reviews of a number with mixed opinions on their reliability. I spend much of my time in France where, incidentally, I have a (clean) swimming pool which requires little maintenance to keep it that way (though I admit it is cleaned by a robot).
My wife, reading the various responses to my initial post says, "Fill the bloody pool with concrete!" I'll be 75 in a few weeks and am beginning to feel that she has a point.
