Hi from Essex
Hi all,
My name is Chris, I currently have a small 400 gallon pump fed pond with 3 small koi all roughly around 15cm, being new to koi I thought I would start small but now I am hooked haha. Reading some of the posts from the pond diaries I have been amazed and inspired at the beautiful ponds people have designed and built and how much knowledge and helpful advice people have of this wonderful hobby. When I move to my next house early next year my girlfriend has given me the thumbs up to build a bigger pond which is an exciting but very daunting task. Hopefully by the time that comes around I will have learnt a lot more from this forum.
Thanks

Just a quick question, what is a sieve and what does it do? I understand all the other parts of a filtration system but never heard of a sieve on a pond set up? is it essential to have one? Thanks

They are commonly used before a bead filter to catch any crud ( mechanical filtration) , so the water going into the bead filter doesn't have any large particles in it , this allows the bead filter to perform the biological filtration

Thanks greengrass that's good to know, can a sieve be used with a nexus (gravity fed) do you know or is it more suited to a bead filter? Trying to compile a list of what i will need to give me some sort of starting budget, fully anticipate that to increase though haha.

Good bits of kit sieves mate normally you gravity feed the sieve then pump from the sieve to preffered filtration but pump fed filtration normaly has to gravity flow back to pond so this would mean the nexus return would have to be above pond level. You can pump to and from (pump feed and then pump return) but its far to much messing about imo balancing 2 pumps etc... They are Also very good to go before showers mate

Thanks lee greatly appreciate this information sorry to bombard you with silly questions just trying to understand it all. So the sieve if i were to use one would be gravity fed from the bottom drain and then from the sieve it would be pumped to the filter e.g nexus/bead etc. then it can either be pumped or gravity fed through the UV back through the return pipe into the pond? :s
Thanks
