Dead koi
Hi I am new to this forum, I came home after work to a dead koi, I was hoping someone would be able to help me as to the cause of death as I don't want my other fish to be at risk. It was a very good feeder right up to death, when I examined it it had a very red puffy anal, I have pictures put I am not sure how to post them? Does anyone know what this could be?

Hi and welcome chris, sorry for the loss of your koi, a tad more info would be great though if you could.
1. Water parameters? E.g ammonia/nitrite levels etc..
2. Pond size (volume and/or dimensions)?
3. Type of build e.g fiberglass/liner etc
4. How long has the pond been running?
5. What filtration do you have running and any extra air?
6. What sort of stocking level and size if fish do you have.
In regards to the problem it could be numerous things, a pic will help but if the koi has been dead for a while then bloating may have occured giving a decieving view if the koi in question. If you can answer above as best you can it will help give people some ideas. Also where anouts are you incase some one could maybe pop over to give a hand and have a better look.
All the best

Hi Lee,
it it is a raised sleeper pond only 6000 litres but only 5 small koi in it as I wanted to give them as much space as possible, I have a 40,000 litre pressurised filter with a 12000 litre an hour pump massively oversized, it has a Venturi fitted to the return and it is 3months old, there is a eucalyptus tree in a neighbours garden that sometimes drops leaves that blow in but not many? I have not tested the water as I am a newbie to all this. The water is slightly coloured at the moment, I change 10% of the water once a week also, I can foward pictures if that could help, sorry for this description but like I said before very red puffy anus, I'm in Surrey.

Hi chris, does look infected that, is there any other signs of infection like this on any of the other koi? Possibly round the mouth area? Looks bacterial to me, any one else?
In regards to your pond 6000 ltr is in my opinion fine for 5 koi. The pressure filter on the other hand unless you mean a bead filter is a big no from me mate. You will find that the colouration to the water could possibly be fines if the pressure type filter is a sponge type. You will find that unless cleaned everyday these track really badly and most of the crud goes straight back into the pond, biggest give away is all the crap in the bottom/bio section, that shouldnt be there if the sponge did its job. Honestly its not a dig as i and many others have learned the hard way with them filters through experience.
You definatly need to go and pick up a test kit, regardless what any shop tells you the test strips are crap. Get an API liquid master test kit for around £20. Test for ammonia/nitrite/nitrate/ph and kh (may have to buy the kh kit seperately as not part of the kits) post up your results and we can go from there.
It would be guess work without them but your filter will definatly not be up to speed yet after 3 months. Changing 10% as you do per week is a good thing though mate
