Talking Pond heater yes or no....??

Hi all, I've bought myself a 4kw heater but am undecided where or if to fit it
Do I fit it to the main pond but set it to low temp (for emergency's) but if so what temp? As I don't want big electric bills or do I fit it to my 1000ltr quarantine tank and use if have poorly koi or for growing on koi fry?

    Thanks in advance Steve

That's seems a big heater for 7000 ltrs steve !
I'm not heated so it's not something I've gone into in great depth . I thought it was 1 kW per 1000 gallons . If it's to powerful you might not have enough of a flow rate to cool it quick enough ..

I could be wrong but I think on one post I read if u have a too powerful heater if the thermostat went wrong you've got more chance of cooking your fish

    Pond heater yes or no....??

I've got a 7kw heat pump and I don't put all the flow from one of my pumps on a 12,500l pond through it so I think you'll be ok flow wise.

Temperature is I think the most subjective subject on this forum
Want the fish to grow? set 20 to 23 deg
Want the best protection from parasites? set 15+ deg
Want some protection from parasites? Set 8+ deg (although some people say never set 6 to 12 as parasites are active and fish immune systems aren't at those temperatures)
And 90% of people with an opinion will disagree with 90% of all posts on temperature
I picked 20 deg but will probably drop to 18 if the ambient temperature drops. I certainly wouldn't heat that high without a heat pump.

Thanks Guys from what John was saying I think I would be inclined to fit it to main pond and raise temp to 8deg that's what the temp has sat at up till last couple of weeks when Jack Frost decided to put in an appearance

Morning Cleveland hoping I can pick your brain please?

I have set the electricity for the pond via 32amp rcb running in 2.5 twin and earth to outside wall approx 2 mtr then 1.5 armoured cable approx 3 mtr to weatherproof junction box that supply's a bank of 4 switches then 1.5 mtr armoured cable feeds off to the pond control box

My thoughts are can I use current supply to feed pond heater or do I need to run 2.5mm twin&earth from fuse board again through conduit direct to the heater?

on 7 kw i would think 6 mm would be the minimum size for the amps if you work on the fact a 8.5 shower use too need 8mm. but i think that`s changed now and 10 mm is used. but your right cleveland is the man to ask.

Hi small fry the heater that you are using is running at about 17 amps (4000/230) =17.39 amps, you would be best having a dedicated supply to the heater in 2.5 twin on a 20 amp mcb but no bigger as 2.5 will only take approx 23 amps. Better still if possible is a 4mm pond supply that way you can supply your existing pond equipment on the same supply. I had a 3kw elecro on my 2000 gallon pond last winter, heated to 12deg And it was costing about £ 80 a month.

Thanks James very helpful, I think I might have some 6mm twin and earth in the garage should instill use 20amp mcb? was planning to fit it today but spent all afternoon cleaning up after our rescue dog that loves destroying and digging everything up but hopefully the new fence will stop that problem reoccurring now fitting heater hopefully my job for next Sunday now or one day in the week if I get finished from work by a decent hour

ok why did i think you had a 7kw heater sorry and small frys is right not that i am a sparky anymore as so out of date on 17th edition. remember the golden rule and have it tested and certified or you may have insurance problems if it goes wrong .

Hi mate if your installing a 6mm twin and earth that can be connected to a 32amp mcb. You would definatly be better installing a dedicated supply to the pond rather than the original supply that's wired in 2.5 then drops to a 1.5, just make sure your all rcd protected and you shouldn't go far wrong

I'm currently de-scaling the heater but I'm on my forth go and the element still looks quite crudded up does anyone know any good tips for cleaning it or know if I can remove element to clean? Or could I put boiling soapy water down it to see if that works?ImageUploadedByTapatalk1390938693.428015.jpg

i would leave it for a day or 2 with white vinegar in it . out you could use lemons. but if its not too bad i would leave it as it is just in case you damage the element. you could leave it in calgon so the wife just told me,

Can't you use the stuff you use in kettles to remove the scale from the element in soft water areas it can't be toxic if you can use it in kettles

Yes mate that's what I've been using but don't think it's lime scale now it's brown ish in colour so I'm assuming it's just crudd now
