Treating some scale damage on the mirror
Well as requested by freddyboy. I thought i should share my little doctory work on the mirror.
About 2 weeks ago my mirror had knocked 2 large scales out down the right hand flank. I was going to just leave it be but it looked a little fleshy and angry so out she came.
Clove oil at 10 drops per 5 litres knocked her out in around 5 mins.
Cut off some of the fleshy remains from around the scale pockets/wounds to stop any rot and further infection.
Cleaned up with some anti bac swab.
Then just sealed up with some propolis wound sealer. Into a fresh vat of water for 5 mins to bring back round then back into the pond (can only add 4 pics to each post) continued below....

She come round pretty quickly but didnt have any problems with her when she was been treated.
Back in the pond you can see how the propolis has sort of waxed over. I must add this only seemed to last around 24-48 hours before it seened to have worn off.
after 2-3 days it looked less angry and 2 weeks in its now skinning over/healing really well this is it now
Im doubtfull that the scales will grow back but she did knock one a few years back but it was only a small one on the tail tube that has since re-grown so who knows maybe?

Nice one Lee, my lot are always taking knocks. I blame the auto feeder for 80% of the damage. If i'm honest I tend to leave them to get on with it while the ponds heated at 24°c. Unless the damage starts to looks infected or needs attention normaly they heal quick enough.

Thanks adam, yeah my usual approach to minor scuffs and knocks is to leave alone especially during the warmer months. With there been a fair bit of fleshy bits stringing off i thought i was better safe than sorry. (It looked like The scales had ripped out if that makes sense) anyways looks like shes on the mend now has a special place in my heart this one as ive had it 18 yearsish from been around 1 inch big

Thanks Tac, it was alot easier on her than i thought as shes a beast to net. Gets going like a train and i fear for the others more than her if they get in the way. Its Very very rare she ever comes out as i just dont take the risk with the others. Most my fish are pretty laxy dazy when netting but not the mirror she definatly knows what a net is. In regards to scale re-growth I think looking back it had definatly grown back after 1 season. It happened in the spring and it was the next springbi noticed it had fully grown back.

Just a littke update on this its now about 1 month on after she had knocked herself and i treated the 2 lost scales/wounds
(Apologies for the bad pic)
They are just visible just left of center towards the tail. As you can see they have healed up perfectly im not pinning any hopes on the scales growing back now but the wounds have skinned over lovely so im well happy with that. As i said earlier these more than probably would have sorted themselves but i wasnt willing to take the chance. I really hope this little thread gives others confidance to get involved if and when needed.

So a little conclusion to this as andre asked recently did the scales grow back? Now im not 100% but i think they actually may be growing back? I cant tell for sure unless i got her out of which im not going to do yet, probably the end of the season for a measure up but shes getting on a bit and doesnt really put much on these days anyway.
Managed to get some half decent shots this morning of the area with the sun behind me.
Its hard to tell if they are scales re emerging or just fleshy scars as such that are in the shape of where the scales were? Either way shes fit and healthy and still like a steam train as soon as the grub hits the water

Running heater at low temp?
Covering the pond with polycarb should be enough to stop water temps dipping below 6C for the most...
