    Pergola Repair

I’d been putting this off for a while.

This is the pergola and poolside rail I built in 1986, taken at the time with myself and my wife. I look suitably apprehensive as I don't like my photo taken.

It was necessary, as when I told my wife I was going to convert our eighteen-inch deep goldfish pool to a 5ft deep koi pool, she informed me that she’d “never be able to walk past it in case she fell in.” (She has MS) So I built it and put a screen of ornamental panels at the bottom to make it look more secure.
I later incorporated the same style panels in the tea house I built the following year. Yes I know, it needs a wash down!

However , the day after I built the pergola, on my return from work in the evening, I found her clambering over the rockery on the other side of the pool, "doing a bit of pruning of the shrubs on the fence," a far more hazardous exercise! The idea was that the wisteria on the side of the garage would eventually grow over the pergola.

The whole construction was of bog standard 3” X 2” untreated softwood, but another coat of Dulux mahogany Woodsheen, every few years kept it free from rot.

However, over time the weight of the wisteria was getting too much for the “3 X 2” so I replaced it all a few years except for the ornamental screen below the rail.
Two 16ft X 5” X 4” beams support the crosspieces of the pergola and the support posts are of a similar size. The whole thing will take my near 12st weight. The hand rail and the two below it are decking rails.

Recently I’d noticed the old screen supported by the new decking rails has just about had it so I pulled it out to repair the rot. The frame had had it, but I was hoping to save the plywood panels, but all of them were starting to rot, so I decided reluctantly to to replace them. I’m reasonably proficient with a jigsaw, (though it wasn't a job I was keen to do) so I was able to cut out the chrysanthemum design using an old panel as a template.

The biggest problem I had was removing the “£2.50” scrawled with a felt-tip marker on the length of off-cut plywood I bought from the woodyard.
No that wasn’t the biggest problem, it was Dulux. They don’t do “interior/exterior” Woodsheen any more. Just “Interior.” Well they do, it’s just that they don’t call it that any more, as they want you to use a more expensive product for exteriors. Someone in Dulux in Altrincham peeled back an over-sticker on one of new liveried cans with “interior” on it to reveal. “Interior/exterior” underneath.

Both the old and the new cans with the same naffin’ bar code was another give-away.

Anyway the job’s done now, I remade the “return” which I did not put back when I rebuilt it a few years ago.

It needs another coat or two of Woodsheen.

I still have to give the tea-house a coat of Woodsheen before we go on holiday at the end of September and I want to tart up the “abandoned 6ft pagoda” as it looks at the moment in the corner of the garden, which I jet-washed to remove the moss build up, which also took off some of the paint.

When you’re retired, “you get up in the morning with nothing to do and go to bed each night with only half of it done.”
Of course, nipping off to play golf in the middle of a job, like I did today, doesn’t help.

    Thanks for the kind words.

I was a bit miffed as I couldn't get exactly the same decking rail for the replacement return. I used a couple of bits on the bottom two rails of what was available, but it's less substantial than the original. I had to use a bit of 3" X 2" for the top. But it doesn't really notice, or wont when it gets another couple of coats of Woodsheen. nor will the fact that although I've put beading around the panels on the path side, but not bothered to do the same poolside, I doubt if the fish will notice.

I’ve finished the pergola rail, it now matches the tea-house veranda ones. Still needs another coat of Woodsheen, but I need a really dry day.

    I’ve also repainted the pagoda.

When I'd finished the pool in 1986, we decided we’d like some Japanese lanterns and I fancied a pagoda. But all we saw in various garden centres were naff and expensive, so I resolved to make my own.

The tale is on this thread.

    http://www.koiforum.co.uk/diy-tips-t...vironment.html

The pagoda as are the lanterns now, nearly thirty years old. There’s been some erosion to the edges of the stages in one or two places and a bit on the roof, but not much considering they are concrete with a layer of mortar to hide the concrete mix. The lanterns are still perfect condition with an nice coating of algae and moss on the tops.

I’m happy with the pagoda rails, they are hardwood beading actually set into the concrete, there’s no rot at all.
The “spikes” on the corners of the roofs, were originally softwood dowel, but they deteriorated over the years, so I started replacing them with red plas plugs, but they just went white after a few months so I’ve gone back to dowels.

I repainted it with Hammerite “smooth” metal paint, as I find that very durable. Masonry paint doesn’t come in small enough quantities.

This photo is a bit deceptive as it looks quite small here, but it’s just over six feet to the top of the sorin (that thing on the roof).

It does look deceiving in the pic DHR but you have a better pic of it in one of your posts and you can see the actual size of it. I think it looks stunning as does the garden surroundings as always.

Funny you should say that, as I do. Old habits die hard.

At one time, if you paid money into a bank you had to make sure the notes were the right way round. Bank tellers would go "Tut!" if they had to turn them round.

It was chucking out down at home this morning, whilst I was playing golf, only seven miles away, we didn't get wet at all.

I've the tea-house to paint tomorrow, so I'll be masking up the windows later to day and finishing off the rubbing down.

My koi were very interested when I was painting the pergola screen. They kept coming to have a look, but they were really only checking to see if any food was about to be thrown in.

They only want us for food, but it's nice to believe they're as interested in us as we are in them.
I was fishing a 20 acre lake in Yorkshire last week and had a mini hurricane over me with clear blue sky visible at the end of the lake????????

This is a totally useless piece of information and sorry for the post hijack DHR but bank tellers were called clarks and they wore a bowler hat called a Nobby, anyone with the surname Clark or Clarke was nicknamed Nobby as was my dearly departed grandad.

    You mean clerks, pronounced clarks.

One of my golfing pals is a retired bank manager. For years now banks have been cutting down on counter assistants as they became known, many banks are down to one "window" and a long queue. The want you to use those "converted fruit machines" to pay your your money in and you hope no one nicks it before it's credited to your account.
He told me that his local branch has now got rid of all windows, so any shop keeper who wants change, has to go to the Post Office for it...and they want two week's notice of their requirements!

I can remember in my teens, banks opened on Saturday mornings. The bank clerks did not wear their usual suits, but casual trousers and sports jackets, the "tweedier" the better it would seem, just to show that this used to be their day off.

    Well, that's the tea-house repainted.
Masking off the 27 windows in the doors was a pain and so was the nine small ones in each of the two side windows, but it was worth it.

The two troughs of hebes I made that fit nicely each side of the steps got another coat too. Actually I didn't make them, they came from a Wyevale garden centre a few years ago, but were in light pine, so they got the Woodsheen treatment.

You can just see the vent under the front of the removable "box" on the roof, made from two halves of an old dishwasher cutlery tray and a bit of 3" X 2"
I only raise it during the summer.
There's also two vents at the bottom of the back wall. It gets unbelievably hot in there due to big roof which attracts the heat. On warm days I always open a door in the mornings, to stop the little fridge and freezer in there having to work overtime.

The smoked perspex window at the far end of the veranda is just to stop cats using the rail to get over the fence. Fortunately, we rarely see a cat in our garden now.

That acer palmatum will get a tidy up when I do the garden tomorrow. The tea-house took up quite a bit of time this week, but I still managed to play golf on Wednesday and Friday. It chucked it down on Monday, so I didn't bother going.
