Default mechanical filter help

Hi everyone

I am in he process of building a new pond and have installed to bottom drains, And have purchased a lacron 30 inch bead filter from JKC at a great price they beat the best price i could find on the internet so that is going on one drain and i have a econobead 50 to put on the other drain. The problem i have is space in the filter shed to get pre filters in? i have a ultra sieve 111 but will need to dig a hole in the filter shed to be able to get my levels ( the garden runs uphill ) on the sieve the wall is 1 m high and so is the sieve so will neeed to drop it? and i also have a multi cyclone but how will i use that on a gravity fed system?

My question is how would or what would you use from the 2 drains in front of the beads? in a confined space

Hi Colin, your build is looking good It is quite surprising how much space all the filtration takes up! but it seems that all bead filters require a pre-filter to sieve out the larger solids.
This is a dilema I face myself, trying to fit it all in a small space. What is never clear, is what would happen if you had a bead connected without a sieve?

What size is your pond or how many gallons do you anticipate it will hold? Looks like you're having a window too?

Keep us posted on your build, or better still, start a thread in the construction part of the site to post all your developments.

Good luck with it all

Hi Miles nice to speak to you again how the Chag! the pond will 5500 galons when finished it just the garden ruuning up hill that is giving me a headache so i have had to go pressure route after the drains so need to get some pre mechanical filters in ? yes i am having a window so i can sit on th patio and watch them while having a beer!

Also 30 inch bead filter 13000 gallons acording to the manafactures so you are right what would happen if i let it go straight to the bead? surely it would just need more cleaning??

Sitting having a beer sounds good I too have a garden on a slope, so it was a bit of a nightmare getting all the levels right.

You have bought a good size bead, that should be more than capable of running your pond ok, and without a pre-filter? who knows, but I guess you're right, just more frequent backwashing & cleaning, not a disaster I wouldn't have thought if you're quite dedicated
Unless others have any views on that?

ps. Chag is just fine, 'crazy' as ever! and always up looking for food or sucking at your fingers!

Default Mechanical filtration

Shame you have purchased bead etc as a drum is the best mechanical filtration, has great flow rates and cleans itself.

Could you not sell what you have and start again?

hi
i think it wise to always put a sieve in front of the bead filter no matter what size bead you using. If you dont add one of these i think it would cause you quite a headache as it would block very quickly and youd be forever flushing it out. by putting a sieve in front of it this will take out all the larger waste so not a great deal will enter the bead filter where it will then polish the water for you aswell as deal with all the amonia and nitrite etc. Bead filters are realy excellent at there job but would be a massive no no to not put a sieve in front of it.

It you are building a shed to house the filters then would seem ideal for a remote located shower.

If you are looking to maintain good water then the Bead filter route will not give you the results you seek, with or without a sieve in front.

looks like a nice new pond you are going for there
im no expert but heres my thoughts
sell your sieve (at a heavily discounted price to me) and purchase one with 2x110mm inlets to take both bottom drains. also you will need 2 outlet pipes to go to 2 pond pumps which each feed your bead filters. one pump via uv and back to pond and one pump to pond and possibly via a shower (or allow for future upgrade for one) im pretty sure these sieves are capable of massive flow rates.
do not skip the sieve from the loop as it will not be worth the hassle.
the question about the levels is one i think you know the answer to already and it probably involves breaking up that concrete floor or possibly adding another course of blocks to top of pond
make sure you have good flow of water towards to viewing screen/tapered off end so this doesn't end up a dead spot
keep us all informed
cheers

Hi Dave just out of interest why would the bead route not be the best way to go? Reason I ask is because I was thinking of installing a super Bead on my skimmer line after a sieve. What would you recommend I use on the skimmer given my current set up?
Thanks in advance, keith
Forgot to add, pond is 17000ltrs running a nexus 200 on bottom drain with ozone & UV 55w. Nothing on the skimmer line at present
