Building easy to hide away silent outdoor shower filter

    Hi Guys,

When I completed recently the silent indoors Bakki shower combo - more here https://www.koiforum.uk/water-treatm...wer-combo.html
    - I thought this was the last piece of filtration I was building - not realizing I was wrong - Christmas holidays - with the extra time off - brought an idea on how to utilize for maximum efficiency my all pumped setup - currently running two lines to RDF - one pump from bottom pick up running all year long and second pump on skimmer line switched off for winter - but having third pumped line to the ASHP running Spring / Summer / Fall only, this gave me an idea to add at it's end yet another shower filter - cannot call it Bakki shower as I cannot use denitrifying media in it - as it would freeze up in winter when out of service - instead I will use Hel-X 12mm version - basically in the same construction setup / housing as I used for the Bakkki shower combo - allowing it to be easily hidden away and properly insulated against heat losses - while being silent - thanks to it's fully enclosed housing with forced air circulation by air stones placed under the lowest crate with media.

Why - whille I was thinking about moving bed setup, I opted for shower filter with Hel-X as it can be easily switched off when I stop using the ASHP in November and start pond heating via heat exchanger from main house ASHP over the winter. It can be restarted in short time in the Spring - when pond ASHP is started early April. The addition of 100L of HEL-X in the new shower filter will increase filtration capacity when feed rate increases as well.

With this addition our 24.000L / 5.300L in the ground pond will have following filtration setup - AEM Easy Drum prefiltering:
600L IBC Anoxic unplanted filter with 18 biocennosis baskets
3x Bakki showers with deniitrifying media with total 140L of Ogata Crystal bio plus 50L K1 in first trays for mechanical / bio filtration
2x Denitrifying tricke tower with total of 100L of HEL-X 17mm biocarrier

all of the above out of sight in the filter house with 2.3m x 1.4m foot print

When finished - new Shower filter with 100L of HEL-X 12 mm biocarrier in four crates outdoors - w/o any mechanical pre-filter - fed by mid water pickup used for the pond 5kW ASHP

I got most bits on hand already - media ordered - so at a leisure pace should finish it in next couple of weeks.

    20171214_095404 high crates.jpg
Housing - rain water harvesting 300L tank will easily blend behind / under the Fargensia Rufa bamboo growing vigoroously around our pond.

The same fruit crates as used already in the Bakki shower combo - with just 8 mm holes will support perfectly the smaller HEL-X 12 mm I ordered - no need for mesh bag to contain it - as was the case of K1 in the top crates in the Bakkki combo - 4 of them will hold 100L of the HEL-X - for over 95 sqr.m of media active surface while weighting only 16kg. Fruit crate makes it very easy to pull it out of the housing and hose it down to clean any debris collected.

Once finished I will post more details how it will turn out - looking forward to the Spring already....

Project successfully completed - can you find the new shower filter among the Farghensia Ruffa bamboo? Hint - it is in front of the pine tree:

Here it is completed - assembled prior moving it to the permanent outdoor position:

Five fruit crates filled with 100L of Hel-X 13mm biocarrier filter media - 95.5 sqr.m of active surface:

Close up from top - 50mm inlet and 75mm bottom drain:

Bottom aeration done by two air stones placd under bottom fruit crate:

Fully assembled new shower filter in location - drip plate supported by two pieces of 20mm diameter PE drinking water pipe cut to length:

Thermal insulation and spray guard at the same time - 2cm extruded styrofoam sheet cut to size and placed over drip plate under the rainwater harvesting tank lid:

Finished shower filter nicelly hidden out of sight between Farghensia Ruffa bamboo:

It will be workiing only when 5kW ASHP will be switched on for pond heating / tempering some time in March - so all three pumped lines will have their own filtration running.

    Happy ponding!

    20/5/2018 update:

As I was not 100% satisfied with the job of drip plate distributing inflowing water over all media surface not as evenly as I would like, I was looking for better solution than the one used initially - e.g. the smaller fruit crate with dimensions of 40 x 20 cm over media crate with size 60 x 40 cm as shown here:
    20180519_original-fruit crate.jpg

It was doing decent job but media outside its perimeter have not been really used - also the holes in it were too large to spread water evenly so I was trying to find better solution still avoiding the laborious drilling of thousands of 3mm holes in even pattern in DIY new drip plate needed three times - solution presented itself in an unexpected place.

When shopping last month in Metro storre I came across aluminium baking sheet with perfect pattern of 3.5 mm holes and dimensions perfectly matching the media crates used - it is 53 x 38 cm - so covering almost perfectly the whole surface of media inside the crate with dimmensions of 60 x 40 cm. So I grabbed all their inventory (two pieces - each costing 9 Euro) and installed it on two out of three shower filters with the same construction:

Yesterday when shopping there agin I got the last missing piece - now in operation and it works very well - all media uniformly wetted.

In the outdoor shower filter - built on the ASHP line w/o any mechanical pre-filter - despite mid water pickup it also does excelkent job as sieve - so once per week it is easily removed and washed. On the two showers in filter shed behind RDF no need to do it - as these are perfectly clean.

When my wife has seen it, she said it is great also for its original intended purpose for baking cookies so she now wants one for the kitchen as well - not a bad idea to have nearby spare part for your filter if ever needed

    27/05/2018 update

Here is the picture of the new drip plate performing very well as coarse sieve at the same time - once per week collected debris are easily scooped with plastic spatula and disposed of to nearby flower bed.

This shower filter is on ASHP line with mid water pickup w/o any mechanical pre-filter - so new drip plate helps prevent shower media clogging.
