I started digging my pond today. I only got a basic outline done in the end because it started raining.Pond1.jpg

Hi Ben, good that you have made a start. Just a couple of things you need to be wary of is digging too close to the fence, be very careful you don't weaken the soil under it as it may all come down especially if it rains.
Could you not make it more the same shape as that area to give you more volume?
Good luck!

Thanks for the advice, I have finished the shape and in the end I left a good amount of space between the pond and fence, so It should be good, ill post a pic tomorrow and if needs be, ill fill some in. And I cant do that because between the edge of the area ive got its got a few inches of cement ): .
Cheers, Ben

Ben, you aren't JUST using a shovel are you?
You dig with a spade then move the earth with a shovel. At least, that's what i do.
It's much easier to loosen the ground with a fork. Or, if the ground is very hard, try VERY CAREFULLY using a pick axe to loosen it.

get a mattock to quickly break the ground and then shovel out, if your holding to tight then you get blisters and soon learn how to dig correctly,
if near a fence paint it now and avoid the headache of painting over a pond for that bit longer in the futurethe slow pond build thread

Running heater at low temp?
Covering the pond with polycarb should be enough to stop water temps dipping below 6C for the most...
