    Enclose or not to enclose?

    Hi everyone,

I had a chat with my builder mate earlier, and I mentioned that we don't seem to be getting summers these days and with winter around the corner, I thought it might be a good idea to bring the out doors, indoors, I was thinking of a timber frame structure, slate roof, insulated wood panelling structure for the sides, I would have to think of natural light, maybe two polycarb sections in roofing to let in more light.

I was just wondering if anyone else was thinking the same, or has done it all ready?

How about a green house with louvers to let out any excess heat. In the winter put down black rugs everywhere to gather solar heat. Remove the rugs in the summer. Then a heat pump would have a much smaller workload to keep the pond at 45-50F in winter and 80F for the summer growout.

A green house would be nice but not cheap or practical for most unless you have a smallish pond. Unless money is no object of course.

Hi steve, i think its agood idea mate. Ive been contemplating a similar sort of thing for my rebuild, it would only be partially enclosed in the summer though with removable doors/sides that would go on during the winter. Or even 2 sides as bi-fold doors so it can be opened right up during the summer/warmer days if i where to do that then i would also definatly heat the pond. Its all in the planning but as always with koi its all about the budget

I regret not doing it from the start if I'm honest. If I ever move or build another pond it would be a must for me. Here are my views on benefits from having a enclosed pond

    1. Enjoyment of the hobby all year around.
    2. Massively reduced heating cost.
    3. No problem with predators.
    4. Reduced risk from thieves and vandals.
    5. Biosecurity from external sources such as frogs, birds and so on.
    6. Peace of mind that it can be locked to keep young children out.
    7. No risks of rain water causing PH swings or contamination.
    8. A koi man cave.

I made this decision 3 years ago and never regretted it. Having an indoor pond not only reduces the heating cost it also allows you to enjoy and admire your koi for 12 months of the year.
The timber frame supports 25mm clear Polly carb sheets.

That's awesome, I would love something like that, but when does a garden structure reach the point where planning permission may be required? I thought it was when it's attached to the house.

Great job, and seems strangely familiar...

Did you document your build, a couple of years ago, Keith?

This is what I'm on with at the moment steve.
I still have another 2 windows to fit then I'm going to insulate the inside of the pond before fibreglassing and also it's going to be double skin cladding with insulation boards between the cladding. I'm wanting the pond up and running by late spring.

thinkin of the same myself.simular to yours kieth, not sure on building regs ' my garden is 2ft ish lower than next doors, which means my fence is 8ft my side
my pergola is eye level height for next door. deffo check first though as each council is different.
my pergola is safe as its not permanent and under a certain maximum area

    Interesting comments

I will probably move in the next 5 years, but to improve my hobby for this length of time, i feel enclosing will be the way forward, again like some of you have said it comes down to budget, and making it look pleasing to the eye, but practical at the same time, I like the idea of being able to open it up in the summer, and enclose through the winter, which probably means it will only be open 2 days of the year

    That looks great Rob,
I wouldn't mind something similar to that

I had no choice but to build an enclosure around the pond steve. My wife likes her cats and dogs and both would more than likely end up in the pond at some stage....plus we have a hell of alot of herons, foxes ( which took the neighbours gold fish) and a few otters too. I live very close to the leeds/ liverpool canal and also close to a river so covering the pond was not really an option, it had to be done to protect the fish.

Hi. Both of my two ponds are indoors, And I seem not to get as many problems as out doors do, So my set up is one out side pond and two indoor ponds one is a 1200gall quarantine pond/grow on, My out side pond is now a mud pond with just air stones running and lilies' It is my first year trying this on my out door pond and all seems well.
    Steve.

Before constructing anything it's always best to first consultant your local planning office and of course the neighbours.
In my area the maximum height for a fence is 1.8m and that's from the lowest ground level point either side and includes any fence attachments, outbuildings such as sheds or pond enclosures that are constructed of predominantly combustible materials such as wood and plastic must be a minimum of 1m away from the boundary.
There's nothing worse than having to demolish something that has cost money and time to build and even if the current neighbors don't report an illegal construction there's nothing to say new neighbors won't.
